What Is Bhagwat Katha?
The Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapuran is one of the great texts of Sanatan Dharma, some eighteen thousand verses across twelve skandhas, composed by Maharishi Ved Vyas. It traces the descent of the divine into the world through its many avatars, and reaches its heart in the life of Shri Krishna.
The tradition of hearing it over seven days comes from the text itself. King Parikshit, cursed to die within seven days, spent that final week listening to the Bhagwat from Shukdev Ji Maharaj — and attained liberation not through ritual or penance, but through hearing. Every Bhagwat Katha since re-enacts that week. It is why the katha is called a Saptah, and why devotees speak of hearing it rather than attending it.
A katha is not a lecture, and those present are not an audience. Across these days the Kathavachak recites, explains and sings; the gathering answers in kirtan; and between the two something takes shape that neither produces alone. People come for an hour and return for eight days. That is simply the nature of it.
